Working with Children & Youth

Working with children and youth is a rewarding, yet challenging, job. When considering counselling, the most successful treatment outcomes result from working with clients who are ready and willing to work. While it is common for some children and youth to feel relieved to speak with someone confidentially other than their caregivers, it is also common for others to feel forced into counselling. In such a circumstance the JR Wellness goal becomes helping the client to have a positive experience in a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship; the intention being that the client will become more open-minded to new counselling opportunities that could arise down the road. If they can look back and consider a prior counselling experience as a safe one--even though they feel it "didn't work"--then they may engage more easily with a new therapeutic relationship in the future if and when they feel more ready for it.
