"Psychotherapy addresses personal difficulties. It allows an individual, family, or couple, to talk openly and confidentially about their concerns and feelings with a trained professional. Almost all types of psychotherapy involve developing a therapeutic relationship, communicating and creating a dialogue, and working to overcome problematic thoughts, feelings or behaviours. There are many issues that psychotherapy can help.
"Psychotherapy aims to increase an individual's sense of well-being and relationships. Psychotherapists are sensitive to the client's needs and employ a wide range of skills to facilitate the client's goals."

Short answer? Anyone and Everyone!
"Because of the many misconceptions about psychotherapy, you may be reluctant to try it out. Even if you know the realities instead of the myths, you may feel nervous about trying it yourself.
Feeling angry, anxious, depressed. Overcoming that nervousness is worth it. That’s because any time your quality of life isn’t what you want it to be, psychotherapy can help.
"Some people seek psychotherapy because they have felt depressed, anxious or angry for a long time. Others may want help for a chronic illness that is interfering with their emotional or physical well-being. Still others may have short-term problems they need help navigating. They may be going through a divorce, facing an empty nest, feeling overwhelmed by a new job or grieving a family member's death, for example.
"Signs that you could benefit from therapy include:
- You feel an overwhelming, prolonged sense of helplessness and sadness.
- Your problems don't seem to get better despite your efforts and help from family and friends.
- You find it difficult to concentrate on work assignments or to carry out other everyday activities.
- You worry excessively, expect the worst or are constantly on edge.
- Your actions, such as drinking too much alcohol, using drugs or being aggressive, are harming you or others"

Psychotherapists and Psychologists and Psychiatrists, Oh My!
Psychotherapists and Psychologists and Psychiatrists, Oh My!

What on earth is the difference between all of these mental health professionals??
Psychotherapist: a registered member of practice who specializes in mental health. They can provide psychotherapy treatment and conduct research on mental health disorders.
Clinical Psychologist: a registered psychologist who has obtained a Ph.D in clinical psychology. They can provide psychotherapy treatment, conduct research, and diagnose mental health disorders.
Psychiatrist: a licensed medical doctor who specializes in mental health disorders. They can provide psychotherapy treatment, conduct research, diagnose, and prescribe or monitor medication.
Note: some professionals listed above may refer to themselves under the sole title of Psychotherapist. Therefore, it is possible for certain psychotherapists to diagnose and/or support treatments involving medication if they are qualified by law to do so. For those who are not qualified to diagnose or support pharmacological treatment directly, this can often be supplemented with the assistance of a family doctor or affiliated professional who can.
